卫然老师获北京大学学士，宾夕法尼亚大学硕士，伦敦政治经济学院博士，具有地理学、城市规划、设计学等多学科背景，曾获宾夕法尼亚大学优秀毕业论文奖、伦敦政治经济学院优秀教师奖等奖项。曾就职于清华同衡规划设计有限公司，从事遗产保护规划编制、政策分析等工作，并在美国、格鲁吉亚、厄瓜多尔等国家参与多项国际遗产保护规划与政策咨询项目。

卫然老师的研究聚焦于遗产保护规划、城市更新与城市治理，以跨学科视角综合城市规划、社会和文化地理学、批判遗产研究、政治社会学和政治经济学等理论。目前的研究主要关注我国城市更新项目的决策与实施过程，尤其是政府与非政府角色之间的协商与竞争、国内外政治经济背景对项目过程的塑造作用、中小城市和大城市的对比、城市更新如何重构文化遗产等。近年来在SSCI/SCI期刊和中文CSSCI期刊发表论文数篇，并多次组织举办国际学术会议。目前担任批判遗产研究协会青年学者联合会（Association of Critical Heritage Studies – Early Career Researchers Network）负责人，及多本遗产保护领域顶级期刊审稿人。
